Mueller’s music education curriculum is based on the new California state music standards which includes the following artistic processes: Create, Respond, Connect and Perform.
The curriculum is enhanced by the application of the Kodaly method which uses developmentally appropriate folk songs and games for children to learn musical concepts. The Kodaly Method breaks down the learning of music into a series of sequential concept learning through singing, listening, movement activities, and instrumental play. This process follows the natural developmental pattern used in learning a language, which is, aural, written, and then read. Mueller Charter School is fully outfitted with a large "Orff" instrumentarium including several xylophones of all sizes and many varieties of small percussive instruments. Music classes are also enhanced by “Orff” experiences with improvisation, creativity, story-telling, and literary connections. Primary students receive “general music” instruction and also choral experiences which help prepare for several concerts and performances each year. On Fridays, students in 6th grade participate in a performance group during school hours. Choral experiences include a wide range of songs to highlight holidays and events throughout the year. Instrumental experiences include an exposure to learning to play a variety string instruments. These opportunities allow for students to explore their musical talents and to make an informed decision about participating in an after school ensemble.
